Term 4 2023

Students this term will be looking at a song called ‘Foto Dulu Dong!’ The purpose of this song is to revise descriptions while also encouraging discussion around Indonesian teen culture, Indonesia’s ‘selfie’ obsession, Bahasa Gaul (Indonesia’s social language) and any similarities and difference to teen culture in Australia. We will also explore the concept of bartering, markets and currency. The song includes some new target structures toko-shop, pakai- wear/use, kepakaian- clothing, various items of clothing, mencium- to kiss/smell and the cultural meaning behind this word.

Through the song students will hear repetition of the target vocabulary and participate in a variety of games and activities to help them acquire Indonesian language.

Term 3 2023

This term students are looking at a story called ‘Mildred mau pacar’ by Jairo Hasagawa Situmorang and Terry T. Waltz.  Due to copywrite reasons, I wont publish the story here.  However it is a fabulous story that uses repetition and humour to introduce new vocab.

Target structures include pacar; macam; tampan; -nya; apakah; kenapa, bukan; berumur; mereka; kesatu (ordinal numbers); tahu; terakhir; menangis; kepadanya; berdua; dan ganteng.

 

Term 2 2023

Students are looking at a story called Aduh! Terlambat sekolah.’ There are lots of new target structures in this story including some around school (tas, ujian, siswa-siswa, lemari); food (roti panggang, lalat, es jeruk, susu, enak); and revision of days of the week and time. Through the story students will practice common Indonesian language structures, and participate in a variety of games and activities to help students acquire Inodnesian language. 

 

Aduh!  Terlambat sekolah.

Wah!  Jam enam.  Aduh, ada ujian di sekolah hari ini.  

Di mana tas saya ?  Tidak ada.  Tidak ada di lemari.  

Ini tas saya.

This term students are looking at a new story called ‘Keluarga besar, keluarga kecil.’  This story revises and extends the vocabulary of families. This story also provides an opportunity to explore vocabulary around likes, houses, places we live and celebrations.

Target structures include lucu-cute, aneh-strage, orang-people, dekat-close, kota-city, desa-country, tempat panas/dingin-hot/cold place, rumah-house, bersama-with, tiri-step, bagaimana-how,nya-his/hers, karena-because, angkat-foster, merayakan-celebrate, masuk-includes, bibi-aunt, paman-uncle, sepupu-cousin, teman-friend.

Term 4 2022

This term students are focusing on a story called ‘Keripik sukun’.

This story is based on a short, contemporary animation.  The animation focuses on Mbok Darmi, who while waiting for her train, meets an annoying stranger.  This animation explores issues of prejudice and respect for elders in Indonesia. 

Target structures include bayar– buy, terlambat-late, tunggu– wait, penculik– kidnapper, wanita– woman, cantik– beautiful, sendirian– alone, tempat yang sepi– a quiet place, berteriak– scream, malu– shy. To acquire this language students will listen to the story; then read what they’ve heard; then write what they’ve read and heard; before finally having a go at speaking.  Students will show comprehension through acting, drawing, translating, recognising and responding to questions and using the vocabulary they have learned to relate back to themselves and their environment. 

 

Keripik Sukun

Di stasiun kereta api Sukahbrahta, ada Ibu.  Nama Ibu Darmi.   

Ibu Darmi beli kripik sukun.  Bayar lima ribu.   

Ibu Darmi terlambat.  Kereta api sudah pergi.    

Sudah jam tiga lebih tiga menit.  Ibu Darmi tunggu kereta api lagi. 

Ibu Darma membaca koran.  Ibu Darmi membaca ada penculik wanita cantik.   

Ibu Darma membaca ‘Jangan sendirian di tempat yang sepi! ‘  Ibu  Darmi takut. 

Ibu Darma lihat laki-laki besar.  Ibu Darmi berteriak.   Ibu Darmi takut. 

Pada jam tiga lebih dua puluh lima menit, laki-laki makan kripik sukun. 

Ibu Darmi marah.  Itu kripik sukun Ibu Darmi. 

Pada jam empat  Ibu Darmi tidur.  

Laki-laki mau ambil kripik sukun  tetapi Ibu Darmi terlalu cepat.  Ibu Darmi marah.   

Ibu Darmi makan kripik sukun.  Ibu Darmi makan kripik sukun terus.   

Ada satu kripik lagi. 

Laki-laki  mau kripik sukun itu. Ibu Darmi mau kripik sukun itu. 

Laki-laki ambil kripik.  Laki-laki kasih Ibu Darmi setengah kripik sukun.  

Ibu Darmi ambil setengah keripik. 

Pada jam lima, laki-laki sudah pergi.  

Ibu Darmi mau pergi juga.  Ibu Darmi ambil tas.   

Ibu Darmi lihat kripik sukun di tasnya.  Aduh!

Jackfruit chips

At the train station in Sukahbrahta, there is an Ibu (an older lady).  The Ibu’s name is Darmi.

Ibu Darmi buys jackfruit chips. The cost 5000Rp.

Ibu Darmi is late.  The train has already gone.

The time is already three minutes past three o’clock.  Ibu Darmi must wait for the next train.

Ibu Darmi reads the paper.  Ibu Darmi reads there is a kidnapper of beautiful women.

Ibu Darmi reads ‘Don’t go to places that are quiet!’  Ibu Darmi is scared.

Ibu Darmi sees a big man.  Ibu Darmi screams.  Ibu Darmi is scared.

At twenty minutes past three, the man eats the jackfruit chips.

Ibu Darmi is mad.  Those jackfruit chips belong to Ibu Darmi.

At four o’clock Ibu Darmi sleeps.

The man wants to take the jackfruit chips but Ibu Darmi is too fast.  Ibu Darmi is mad.

Ibu Darmi eats the jackfruit chips.  Ibu Darmi eats the jackfruit chips constantly.

There is one chip left.

The man wants to eat the jackfruit chip.  Ibu Darmi wants to eat the jackfruit chip.

The man takes the chip.  The man gives Ibu Darmi half the chip.

Ibu Darmi takes the half chip.

At five o’clock the man has gone.

Ibu Darmi wants to go too.  Ibu Darmi takes her bag.

Term 3 2022

This term students are focusing on a story called ‘Moose takut’ 

The stories focus on the use of language regarding school. New language will include the words keluar; takut; terus; pulang; menangis; berjalan kaki; mungkin; buka; pintu; sekarang; sekolah dasar, pada hari; di sini; kantor; perpustakaan. Students will also be revising likes and dislikes as well as some previously learnt vocabulary. Through the storywe will practise target structures and participate in a variety of games and activities to help students acquire Indonesian language. 

 

Moose takut

Ada perempuan.  Nama dia Ibu Jenna. 

There is a girl.  The girl’s name is Miss Jenna.

Ibu Jenna tinggal di Victor Harbor. Ibu Jenna guru di Sekolah Dasar Victor Harbor.

Miss Jenna lives in Victor Harbor.  Miss Jenna is a teacher at Victor Harbor Primary School.

Ibu Jenna punya anjing.  Nama anjing Moose.  

Miss Jenna has a dog.  The dog’s name is Moose.

Moose pandai tetapi gila.  Moose suka eskrim dan tidak suka ular.  

Moose is clever but crazy.  Moose likes ice cream and doesn’t like snakes.

Term 2 2022

This term students will be looking at a story called Kancil dan BuayaThis story is a folktale from Indonesia.  In this story there is focus on prepositions, group classifiers and time markers.  It includes revision of numbers and animals, and invites discussion on intercultural connections around environment, jungle and place of folktakes in Indonesia.  Some students who may already be familiar with the kancil story will be able to extend their learning the learning of a second chapter.  Through the storywe will practise target structures and participate in a variety of games and activities to help students acquire Indonesian language.

 

Kancil dan buaya

The mousedeer and the crocodile

Kemarin kancil berjalan di sungai.  Kancil lihat manga-manga di sebelah sungai.

The other day mousedeer was walking by the river.  Mouseer saw mangoes across the river.

Kancil lapar dan mau makan manga.  Tetapi kancil tidak bisa berenang.

Mousedeer was hungry and wanted to eat mango.  But the mousedeer couldn’t swim.

Kancil lihat banyak buaya di sungai.  Ada banyak buaya lapar di sungai. Kancil bisa apa?

Mousedeer saw lots of crocodiles in the river.  There were lots of hungry crocodilesin the river.  What could mousedeer do?

Kancil berkata ‘Halo buaya.  Berapa ekor buaya di sungai?’

Mousedeer sayd ‘Hello crocodile.  How many crocodiles are in the river?’

Buaya berkata ‘Tidak tau’. Kancil berkata ‘Saya mau hitung.  Ayo buaya antri.’ Buaya antri.

The crocodile said ‘I don’t know.  Mousedeer said ‘I want to count.  Come on crocodiles line up.’  The crocodiles lined up.

Kancil melompat dari buaya ke buaya.  Kancil berkata ‘Ayo hitung 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.’

Mousedeer jumped from crocodile to crocodile.  Mousedeer sayd ‘Come on count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.’

Kancil samapi di sebelah sungai.  Kancil berlari dan tertawa.  Buaya marah sekali.

Mousedeer arrived at the side of the river.  Mousedeer ran and laughed.  The crocodiles were very mad.

Kancil senang sekali makan manga-manga.  Kancil terlalu pandai!

Mousedeer was very happy eating the mangoes.  Mouseer is too clever!

 

Term 1 2022

Phew!  It’s been a bit of crazy start to the year but I finally feel like I’m starting to catch up.  So for all year levels this term we are doing some revision of family.  For the upper primary students this means looking at the Inspiredmedia.com.au resource Fenty’s Day.  If you teach Indonesian, and you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it.  In the interest of protecting copywrite, I will not publish the story here, however if the program runs according to plan (ha ha) then students will be able to share this story with parents soon.

The story is about a young girl from the Halmahera, her family and everyday routines.  There will be revision of family, school and everyday routines while also providing rich discussion around intercultural connections.

 

 

Term 4 2021

It is the last term that I will be teaching year 7s, and I’m having a few mixed feelings about it.  I will miss the conversations and more in depth teaching I can do with the older students, but I also know that they are ready to be at the high school.  So with a last hooray for the 7s, we’ve decided to focus on a Project Pop song this term.  Which one you ask?  I considered Dangdut is the music of my country, but it has a lot of formal language in it, and is also quite old.  So we’ve decided to go with Gara-gara corona because it’s fairly recent, has lots of everyday language, and made us all smile.  Hopefully it puts a smile on the faces of my students too!

Term 3 2021

Students this term will be looking at a story called ‘Ibu ke Pasar’ by Daniel Bradbury. In this story we are introduced to a traditional Indonesian market with an array of wares. Students are introduced to names of fruits and vegetables and adjectives of size, colour, shape and taste. Some of these adjectives will be revision however new vocab will include apa-what; asam-sour; awas-watch out; belanja-shopping; beli-buy; berat-heavy; berduri-thorny; bundar-round; dari-from; manis-sweet; panjang-long; pedas-spicy; pulang-go home; selesai-finish.

This is Bali.

This is papaya.  Papaya is big and sweet.  Mum buys one papaya.

This is durian.  Durian is big.  Durian is thorny.  Watch out!

This is pumpkin.  Pumpkin is big and heavy.  Do you like pumpkin?

Term 2 2021

Students this term will be looking at a story from Anne McKelvie called ‘Murid Nakal.’  In this story we revise school vocabulary and introduce some new target structures including baik hati-kind; peraturan-rules; menghitung-count;tetapi-but; berkata-says;ambil-takes;melempar-throws; menulis-write;  mengejar-chase; astaga-OMG; sekarang-now; harus-must.  We will also take the opportunity to discuss cultural points around school including senam pagi; kasih hormat; upacara bendara while also making comparisons between school in Indonesia, Australia and beyond.

Quakers baik hati tetapi nakal dan tidak suka peraturan.

Quackers nakal.  Quackers tidak mau buka topi.  Quackers ambil topi dan melempar!

Mrs Foot’s class goes to the Indonesian room.

There is a girl in Mrs Foots class.  The girl’s name is Quackers.

Quackers is kind but naughty and doesn’t like rules.

Ibu Sharon says ‘Mrs Foot’s class take off your hats.’

Mrs Foot’s class is good at listening and take off their hats.

Quackers is naughty.  Quackers takes her hat and throws it!

Ibu Sharon is mad and says ‘Oh my gosh!’

 

Ibu Sharon says ‘Mrs Foot’s class sit down.’

Mrs Foot’s class is good at listening and sits down.

Quackers is naughty.  Quackers doesn’t sit Quackers dances!

Ibu Sharon is mad and says ‘Oh my gosh!’

 

Ibu Sharon says ‘Mrs Foot’s class start writing.’

Mrs Foot’s class is good at listening and starts writing.

Quackers is naughty.  Quackers doesn’t want to write.

Quackers stands up and sings very loudly!

Ibu Sharon is mad and says ‘Oh my gosh!’

Ibu Sharon says ‘You must go to the office now!’

But Quackers doesn’t want to go to the office.

Now Quackers is mad and Ibu Shaorn is scared!

In my family there are eight Mades.

Term 4 2020

Student’s learning this term will be based on a YouTube video called ‘Kripik Sukun.’  Target structures include bayar– buy, terlambat-late, tunggu– wait, penculik– kidnapper, wanita– woman, cantik– beautiful, sendirian– alone, tempat yang sepi– a quiet place, berteriak– scream, malu– shy. To acquire this language students will listen to the story; then read what they’ve heard; then write what they’ve read and heard; before finally having a go at speaking.  Students will show comprehension through acting, drawing, translating, recognising and responding to questions and using the vocabulary they have learned to relate back to themselves and their environment. 

 

Keripik Sukun

Di stasiun kereta api Sukahbrahtaada Ibu.  Nama Ibu Darmi.   

Ibu Darmi beli kripik sukun.  Bayar lima ribu.   

Ibu Darmi terlambat.  Kereta api sudah pergi.    

Sudah jam tiga lebih tiga menit Ibu Darmi tunggu kereta api lagi. 

Ibu Darma membaca koran.  Ibu Darmi membaca ada penculik wanita cantik.   

Ibu Darma membaca ‘Jangan sendirian di tempat yang sepi‘  Ibu  Darmi takut. 

Ibu Darma lihat laki-laki besar.  Ibu Darmi berteriak.   Ibu Darmi takut. 

Pada jam tiga lebih dua puluh lima menitlaki-laki makan kripik sukun. 

Ibu Darmi marah.  Itu kripik sukun Ibu Darmi. 

Pada jam empat  Ibu Darmi tidur 

Laki-laki mau ambil kripik sukun  tetapi Ibu Darmi terlalu cepat Ibu Darmi marah.

Jackfruit chips

At the train station in Sukahbrahta, there is an Ibu (an older lady).  The Ibu’s name is Darmi.

Ibu Darmi buys jackfruit chips. The cost 5000Rp.

Ibu Darmi is late.  The train has already gone.

The time is already three minutes past three o’clock.  Ibu Darmi must wait for the next train.

Ibu Darmi reads the paper.  Ibu Darmi reads there is a kidnapper of beautiful women.

Ibu Darmi reads ‘Don’t go to places that are quiet!’  Ibu Darmi is scared.

Ibu Darmi sees a big man.  Ibu Darmi screams.  Ibu Darmi is scared.

At twenty minutes past three, the man eats the jackfruit chips.

Ibu Darmi is mad.  Those jackfruit chips belong to Ibu Darmi.

At four o’clock Ibu Darmi sleeps.

The man wants to take the jackfruit chips but Ibu Darmi is too fast.  Ibu Darmi is mad.

Ibu Darmi eats the jackfruit chips.  Ibu Darmi eats the jackfruit chips constantly.

There is one chip left.

The man wants to eat the jackfruit chip.  Ibu Darmi wants to eat the jackfruit chip.

The man takes the chip.  The man gives Ibu Darmi half the chip.

Ibu Darmi takes the half chip.

At five o’clock the man has gone.

Ibu Darmi wants to go too.  Ibu Darmi takes her bag.
