This term students are focusing on a story called ‘Harimau makan Elsa’.   We have lots of fun with this story, switching up the characters, animals and whom chases whom!

The story focuses on the use of high frequency language ada-there is; ke-to; berlari-run; lihat-see; dia-he/she; aduh-oh no; pohon-tree; rumah-house and harimau-tiger. 

Through the storywe will practise target structures and participate in a variety of games and activities to help students acquire Indonesian language.

Ada harimau.  Harimau lapar.

Receptions will be starting with an introduction to the country of Indonesia and the language of Indonesian. We will begin by looking at greetings, colours, numbers, instructional language(duduk,berdiri,terimakasih,sama-sama),andtalking about ourselves (nama,saya,suka).

As we do every year, receptions will be starting with an introduction to the country of Indonesia and the language of Indonesian. We will begin by looking at greetings, colours, numbers, instructional language(duduk,berdiri,terimakasih,sama-sama),andtalking about ourselves (nama,saya,suka).

Time permitting, we will look at a story about a hungry orangutan (see Term 1 2020), however due to timetable changes, this may not be possible with all classes.

This term students will be looking at a story called ‘Banyak donut!’  It will be a fun way to continue to learn high frequency words in Indonesian as well as introducing some new words. New words include, ini-this is, buaya-crocodile, suka-likes, ambil-takes, berkata-says, jangan-don’t, pergi ke-goes to, banyak-lots, sakit-sick, muntah-vomitThrough the story we will practice target structures, participate in a variety of games and activities to help students acquire the Indonesian language.

Harimau makan Elsa is one of my most popular stories.  The students love it…. especially when I change the storyline.  You never know who is going to eat whom!

Our story for this term is Harimau makan Elsa.  Don’t get caught up on the detail though… every time we act this it changes.  Sometmes harimau makan Elsa, sometimes Elsa makan harimau, sometimes Elsa dan harimau makan es krim!  It’s all a bit of fun and no-one has been traumatised during the learning of Indonesian!

Term 1 2020

I’ve only just recently realised that I post almost all the stories we learn in Junior Primary, Middle Primary and Upper Primary but I haven’t posted anything about what I do with the receptions. Unfortunately what I do is impacted by timetables.  Some years the receptions only have one lesson a week and some years receptions have 2 lessons a week.  However, regardless of one or two lessons per week, I’ll try to give you an overview of what I do!

In Term One I tend to focus on the basics.  Even the concept of a second language can be quite difficult for little people to understand.  We look at where Indonesia is located compared to Australia (Google Earth is great for this).  I show lots of pictures of Indonesia’s islands, animals, people, buildings etc. and we talk about similarities and differences.  We then look at some of the basic language structures I need to introduce to set up routines in the Indonesian room, like Greetings; Thank you/You’re Welcome; Numbers and Colours.  I also do lots of TPR (Teaching through Physical Response) with all of the junior primary students throughout the year but especially the receptions.  This is basically Simon Says but in Indonesian. I say an Indonesian word and they respond by physically showing me what the word means.  We cover lots this way (stand, sit, run, walk, sleep, dance, turn around, wake up, fast, slow).

Once the basics have been covered we can get on with the fun stuff.  I always start out with the Spongebob story.  The Spongebob story covers the words mau-wants; punya-has; kasih-gives; makan-eats; minum-drinks.

Another story we like to look at focuses on the words ambil-takes; suka-likes; ini-this is; berkata-says; jangan-dont; dan-and; banyak-lots; sakit-sick; muntah-vomit!  For some reason the littlies always love stories with vomit in them!!

This is the basics of the reception program.  When we have two lessons a week (like this year) we will go through this pretty quick.  So there will be a lot more stories, songs and games however we tend to focus on the same core vocab.  The ones we really want them to remember are: mau-wants; punya-has; kasih-gives; ada- there is; pergi ke-goes to; ambil-takes; bisa-can; suka-likes.  Any questions, please feel free to come in anytime.  😉
