PRONOUNCIATION

The letter C is pronounced “ch” as in “children”.  A is pronounced like the letter A in “father”.  E is pronounced like the letter E in “elephant” or like the E in “mother”. I is pronounced like the letter I in “it”.  O is pronounced like the letter O in “orange”.  U is pronounced like the OO is “food”.

GREETINGS

Selamat pagi – Good morning (sunrise – 11am)              Selamat siang – Good day (11am – 3pm)
Selamat sore – Good afternoon (3pm – sunset)               Selamat siang – Good evening(sunset-sunrise)
Apa kabar?  – How are you?                                                      Baik-baik saja – Just fine.
Anda – you (for an older person)                                           Kamu- you (for a younger person)
Siapa nama Anda/kamu? – What is your name?              Nama saya ………. – My name is ……….
Berapa umur Anda/kamu? – What is your age?               Umur saya …… tahun – I am … years old.
Anda/kamu tinggal di mana?  – Where do you live?       Saya tinggal di…..….. – I live in …………..

7 tujuh                                                8 delapan                                 9 sembilan

Follow this pattern for all subsequent numbers:
belas – teen (ie nineteen= sembilanbelas)
puluh – ty  (ie thirty = tigapuluh)
ratus – hundred (ie 600 = enamratus)
ribu – thousand ( ie 4000 = empatribu)

se is used instead of satu at the start of numbers (ie not satubelas but sebelas; not satupuluh but sepuluh; not saturatus but seratus)

Hari ini hari apa?  – What day is it today?                  Hari ini hari ……- Today is …………
Hari minggu – Sunday                  Hari senin – Monday                      Hari selasa – Tuesday
Hari rabu – Wednesday                 Hari kamis – Thursday                    Hari jumat – Friday
Hari sabtu – Saturday
